Cooking with Janie: My All-Purpose Gluten Free Flour Mix!

As you probably guessed by now, I am 100% gluten free. In fact, my house is a gluten free zone (none of our dishes have ever touched gluten, I don't own a toaster, I live off of Udi's, etc.) Hahaha. It's just a way of life around this House of Janie. But I don't have time to mess with these crazy GF recipes that float around Pinterest and Facebook. If I can't use a regular recipe and sub. my GF flour for wheat flour, or GF pasta for wheat pasta, I'm on to the next thing!

If you're GF too, you'll know that one of the hardest things to do when preparing a meal is substituting an ingredient in a recipe. Why? Most gluten free flours aren't "cup for cup"., That means you can't use one cup of GF flour when a recipe calls for one cup of wheat flour. Sounds crazy, but the reason is quite simple. Many GF flours are quite heavy. Since cooking and baking is essentially chemistry, not only does the portion need to be correct, but so does the weight. When this balance is off, GF recipes simply fail, are dry or extremely heavy.

But who has time to compare weight for weight on a food scale? And what about the portion?

WinCo Trip 2/12

Oh boy, I tried to do this trip with my husband and let me start by saying, I have the most supportive man I have ever met by my side. I feel so blessed. He would carry me thru a blaze of fire if it would simply make me happy... we. are. sappy. lol.

That being said, he draws the line at my obsession with blog photos! Hahaha, anytime I pulled out my phone, he walked a good 5 to 10 feet away :S I guess I'm crazy, but I love sharing here on Janie Girl, even if I do get strange looks from shoppers and followed by store security :)

Here's my round-up of WinCo deals from last night. It was super busy, but not too many deals, to be honest. Better than Walmart, tho! :) Remember, YYMV. These are all unadvertised deals and can change at anytime.

Kraft Shredded Cheese $1.98
- $.50 Kraft Natural Shredded Cheese (By the entrance at WinCo!)

Top Deals of the Week - 1/28 - 2/3

Good morning all! Here is this week's popular deals and sales. You can use this like a shopping list or as a handy reference guide to Ad Match at Walmart. It covers the greater part of the Valley here in Arizona (Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, Peoria, Suprise etc.). Please keep in mind that there may be some variation - discretion is always left to the Walmart manager if matching is possible.

I personally like to bring Walmart's official Ad Match policy and their coupon policy along with me so there is no confusion at the check out. I also included links to each store's weekly flyer, so if you have a mobile device you can quickly pull it up to verify an item at checkout (if needed).

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment here or on the FB page. Also, check out the Deals 101 page which has a full list of my abbreviations. To take this list with you, use the share buttons at the bottom of the post to email, print or save. It's even customizable with just a few clicks! Enjoy!

Winco Deals 1/25

Hey Winco shoppers, did you get the circular recently? Wow what a spread of coupons and just in time for the big game! These were delivered on 1/13 - 1/15, so if you haven't seen them in your mailbox yet (like me) you're likely outside of the marketing area. Still, WinCo is true to their shoppers and there were plenty of deals. Check out these highlights:
Sunbird seasoning packets were marked down to just $.68 with multiple varieties available. Since we haven't seen a coupon for this in about a year, this is a great price. These are often around $1 elsewhere.
Another great price on a staple item; this week grab Sun liquid detergent for just $3.98. That means you can grab the big container for roughly the price of the small at other stores.

However, you can sweeten the deal if you have the iBotta app:

Sun liquid detergent $3.98
- iBotta rebate, any brand laundry detergent 32 oz or larger $.25
= $3.73 after rebate

WinCo Deals 1-5-15

There are some great deals at WinCo today. Here's the rundown of the best unadvertised sales and coupon match-ups I saw...

At the door and/or customer service desk you'll find WinCo coupons. Today I grabbed a coupon for $1 off any one Knorr bouillon product, limit two coupons per transaction/customer. That made these bouillon cubes free at checkout.

There were other bouillon products listed for less ($.72), however the coupon specifies no overages or adjustments. Be sure to grab the appropriate ones if you're going to do this deal.

Other items I saw on sale included Christmas clearance and overstock of turkeys and ham. Not pictured above: ham for $1.08/lb, down from $1.28/lb during the holiday season and candy cane packages for $.56.

And here's a great deal if you like ground turkey. Get a frozen 5 pound chub for $8.98 or $1.79/lb.

And for the gluten-free deal of the day! Get a 12 pack of Foster Farms gluten-free corn dogs for $4.78. That's one to two dollars cheaper than anywhere else.

* Please keep in mind these are unadvertised deals. Often these sales vary by store and YMMV.

WinCo: FREE Silk Egg Nog and Tabasco!

Over the weekend I made a run to WinCo for everything I couldn't get for less elsewhere. I like getting sale items out of the way first (i.e. chicken at Bashas' for $1.57/lb this week or price matching produce at Walmart). Now WinCo is my go-to place for everything else. They seem to have better "everyday prices" and I like the selection. Here are a few finds I caught while I was there!

If you're dairy free, you might want to check for Silk egg nog. It was markdown to $0.38, you can't beat that price... that is unless you use a coupon! Go here for a $2 off coupon and get it free and maybe some overage! Also, there is a coupon for borax on the WinCo coupons' page. Get a large box of Borax for $2.38 after $1 off coupon! I use Borax for lots of things, but mostly to make my own laundry detergent. I'll share my recipe in a later post so you can try it too!

Lastly, I got a fun surprise at the checkout. The cashier was giving away Tabasco sauce for free. How awesome is that? She had coupons for the freebie, so no need to do anything yourself, but as always with WinCo finds YMMV (meaning these deals may be specific to location).

UPDATE: I forgot to mention if you use the iBotta app you can get deals on some other things too! Earn $.25 back on eggs, $.25 on cereal and $.25 on bread. Also there's a great deal on Brilla gluten-free pasta. Purchased for $1.99 and get $1.00 back from iBotta. Some packages have been spotted with coupons taped to their boxes, so keep an eye out for an extra dollar off making them free!
